AISI 1045 45 S45C C45E/1.1191 EN8D/080M40 Forged Carbon Steel Round Bar
1: 1045 Steel Introduction
Steel C45 Round Bar is an unalloyed medium carbon steel, which is also a general carbon engineering steel. C45 is a medium strength steel with good machinability and excellent tensile properties. C45 round steel is generally supplied in the black hot rolled or occasionally in the normalised condition, with a typical tensile strength range 570 - 700 Mpa and Brinell hardness range 170 - 210 in either condition. It does not however respond satisfactorily to nitriding due to a lack of suitable alloying elements.

5: 1045 Steel Mechanical Properties
The mechanical properties mainly include tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, area or reduction, hardness, impact value, non-metalic inclusion etc. Different heat treatment, the mechanical properties will be different, such as normalized, tempered, QT. 7: 1045 Steel Application
1045 alloy steels are used for axles, bolts, forged connecting rods, crankshafts, torsion bars, light gears, guide rods, screws, forgings, wheel tyres, shafts, sickles, axes, knives, wood working drills, hammers, etc.
8: 1045 Steel Heat Treatment
AISI 1045 Forged, annealed, normalized, stress relieved, hardened and tempered
Forging
Heat to 850°C - 1250°C (1562°F - 2282°F). Hold until temperature is uniform. Cool in oven.
Annealing
Heat to 800°C - 850°C (1472°F - 1562°F). Hold until temperature is uniform. Cool in oven.
Normalizing
Heat to 870°C - 920°C (1598°F - 1688°F). Hold until temperature is uniform. Soak for 10 - 15 minutes. Cool in still air.
Stress-Relieving
Heat to 550°C - 660°C (1022°F - 1220°F). Hold until temperature is uniform. Soak each 25mm slice for 1 hour. Cool in still air.
Hardening
Heat to 820°C - 850°C (1508°F - 1562°F). Hold until temperature is uniform. Soak each 25 mm slice for 10 - 15 minutes. Quench in water or brine.
Tempering
Reheat to 400°C - 650°C (752°F - 1202°F) as needed. Hold until temperature is uniform. Soak each 25mm slice for 1 hour. Cool in still air.

10: Delivery Condition
For hot forged bar, usually the delivery condition is hot forged, annealed/QT, rough turned/Black surface.
For hot rolled bar, usually the delivery condition is hot rolled, annealed/QT, Black surface.
For Cold Drawn bar, usually the delivery condtion is cold drawn, annealed/QT, peeled/black surface
For hot rolled plate, usually the delivery condition is hot rolled, annealed, milled/black surface
For hot forged plate, usually the delivery condition is hot forged, normalized/annealed, milled/black surface.
