105WCr6/1.2419 SKS31 Alloy Cold Work Tool Steel


1: SKS31 Steel Introduction

  SKS31 steel has high hardenability. Due to the formation of carbides by tungsten, this steel has more excess carbides and higher hardness and wear resistance after quenching and low temperature tempering than chromium and 9SiCr steels. In addition, tungsten helps to preserve fine grains, which results in a steel with better toughness. Therefore, cutting tools made from SKS31 steel have less chipping and maintain the shape and size of the cutting edge better. However, the steel is sensitive to the formation of carbide networks, and the presence of such networks puts the tool edge at risk of spalling, which shortens the tool's service life; therefore, steels with carbide networks must be forged and normalized according to their severity.

7: 1.2419 Steel Application

Cold Work Dies: 1.2419 die steel is widely used in the manufacture of cold work dies, such as stamping dies, cold rolling dies and cutting dies. Its high hardness and good wear resistance enable it to withstand cold work operations under high pressure and high temperature conditions.

Cutting Tools: As 1.2419 die steel has good cutting performance, it can also be used to manufacture cutting tools, such as cutters, drills, milling cutters, etc.

Special Tools: 1.2419 die steel is also suitable for manufacturing some special tools, such as cold heading dies and cold extrusion dies.


8: 1.2419 Steel Heat Treatment

Pre-heating Treatment: Heat the 1.2419 mold steel to 400-500°C and hold it for a period of time to relax the internal stresses and heat it evenly.

Heating Treatment: Heat the preheated mold steel to 950-1000°C and hold it for a certain period of time to make sure the material reaches the required temperature.

Holding: Holding at the heating temperature for a certain period of time to distribute the temperature evenly.

Quenching: The heated die steel is rapidly immersed in a cooling medium (e.g. oil, water or air) to rapidly cool the material and form a martensitic organization. The choice of quenching medium depends on the hardness required and the size of the material.

10: Delivery Condition
For hot forged  bar, usually the delivery condition is hot forged, annealed/QT, rough turned/Black surface.
For hot rolled bar, usually the delivery condition is hot rolled, annealed/QT, Black surface.
For Cold Drawn bar, usually the delivery condtion is cold drawn, annealed/QT, peeled/black surface.
For hot rolled plate, usually the delivery condition is hot rolled, annealed, milled/black surface.
For hot forged plate, usually the delivery condition is hot forged, normalized/annealed, milled/black surface.
